Although Roy just recently joined Last Stand, he’s been a long time friend and pickin’ partner to just about everyone in the group. He picked up the guitar at a very early age, his dad being a Jimmie Rodgers style singer/blue yodeler, he always had a guitar laying around. He went through an electric phase but came back to the solid “roots” music after seeing the movie Bonnie & Clyde. He knew then and there that he just had to be a banjo picker. In 1969 Roy joined The Bluegrass Okies ,They played together until about 1974 after that, he played with several bands including Rudy Q. Jones and Red Dirt, Bluegrass Volunteers, The Sossman Family, Oklahoma Bluegrass Gentlemen, Bob Wackerly & Blue Mt. Boys, Nash Ramblers, Country Grass and most recently five years with The Keener Family & Roy Barnes.
Roy became seriously interested in dobro while playing banjo with Rudy Jones and has been playing dobro since about 1978. Roy began his “songwriting career” in 1995 and has had several of his songs recorded by regional bands. He and his wife Judy have four children, six grandchildren and two great-grand children. Roy retired from Sprinkler fitters Local 669 in 1999 with 33 years of service and now works part time as an Instructor for the Apprenticeship training dept.
